AI Enhanced Quiz Creation

Overview

QuizMaker is a popular web based quiz creation tool offering multiple question types, simple sharing options, a vast template library, and detailed, customizable reports. Designed for educators, content creators, and quiz enthusiasts, it enables users to craft engaging assessments with ease. At the time of this project, QuizMaker only supported manual quiz creation

The Problem

Creating quizzes on QuizMaker was a slow, repetitive process with limited variety

Users spent 45–60 minutes crafting a single quiz, often relying on a small pool of templates that led to repeated questions. Many searched other websites for inspiration, making the process time consuming and inefficient, time that could be better spent on other things.

Seamless AI, native to the existing flow

  • Added Generate with AI under Add Question, alongside MCQ/True-False/etc., so it’s instantly discoverable and feels native.

  • Updated the existing popup and added a new AI button, no new tool, no learning curve for new or existing users.

Intuitive AI prompting for everyone

  • Kept the AI popup simple and consistent with the existing builder, with clear labels and tooltips, so it aligns with users current mental model.

  • Created the particular prompt structure to empower users to explore possibilities while applying smart limits so the builder always works reliably.

  • Gave users the flexibility to keep only the questions they like and regenerate selected ones or the entire set in one go, ensuring full control to the user.

The path to this design wasn’t linear, it involved exploring multiple directions before converging on the right one.

01 Research

User Interviews

Conducted interviews with existing users, primarily teachers, trainers, and content creators who create quizzes on a regular basis with the goal to uncover pain points in the current manual flow and understand user frustrations.

Teachers emphasized that creating a quiz takes a lot of time, and preparing multiple practice tests for students made the task even harder.

Interviewees highlighted the importance of fresh, engaging questions to keep learners interested, rather than reusing similar formats repeatedly.

Many felt that too much time was consumed in quiz creation, leaving less time for higher value tasks like preparing notes, content, or lesson plans.

Hotjar Analysis

Leveraged Hotjar recordings and heatmaps to observe real user behavior in QuizMaker and uncover where they struggled.

Tab switching behavior indicated that users were leaving QuizMaker to search for inspiration elsewhere.

A high drop off rate occurred midway through the quiz creation process, suggesting frustration or fatigue.

Users spent lot of time exploring templates but often end up using none, reinforcing the need for more variety and better guidance.

How might we reduce creation time while expanding variety and avoiding repetition in quizzes?

02 Ideation

Brainstorming Ideas

Building on insights and gaps, I captured everything from quick fixes to bold concepts before narrowing down to the most impactful direction

Converging on a Solution

Comparing the ideas against a clear criteria allowed me to narrow down to the solution that best addressed these 3 questions

When mapped against these, many ideas fell short. Expanding templates could add some variety, but it didn’t fundamentally reduce the time burden. Workflow optimizations helped with speed but didn’t eliminate the need for inspiration from outside sources.


AI assistant, however, consistently rose to the top. It not only accelerated creation but also brought in fresh, unique questions, all while keeping users within the platform. Importantly, it aligned with broader industry trends, putting QuizMaker at the front.

The Challenges

While AI Assistant emerged as the best solution, integrating it into QuizMaker came with its own set of challenges.

Keeping it intuitive

Ensuring even less tech fluent users could take full advantage of AI without feeling overwhelmed.

Consistency

Designing the AI flow to mirror the manual builder so users didn’t have to relearn the product.

Boundaries for prompts

Setting guardrails that prevented broken outputs while still giving users flexibility to explore possibilities.

Building trust

AI was still unfamiliar to many, so we prioritized transparency, safety, and data security to gain user confidence.

I focused on turning ideas into a seamless design, carefully addressing the challenges and the opportunity

    On the dashboard, I deliberately kept the “Create a Quiz” CTA in the same position as before. This ensured that the primary waypoint into quiz creation remained known for existing users

  • Dropdown

    Introduced new options like Templates and Ready made Quizzes, while keeping Create from Scratch as the primary entry point. This gave users more flexibility without disrupting their familiar starting flow.

  • Quiz Creation Screen

    On the Quiz Creation screen, I introduced a “Generate Questions” option to let advanced users quickly access AI powered creation.

  • Add Question Popup

    Placed “Generate with AI” under the Add Question popup, so users could seamlessly choose between adding questions manually or generating them with AI. This kept everything in one familiar popup keeping the flow consistent.

  • AI Window

    Designed the prompts to be simple and intuitive by asking them simple questions, so even users unfamiliar with AI could use them easily. To build trust, the system relied on an in-house trained model, ensuring user data remained secure. I also gave users full control over the output, keeping the questions they liked and regenerating the ones they didn’t.

04 User Testing

To measure adoption and refine the design, I ran usability tests and collected direct feedback from target users.

What users liked

Found quiz generation easier and quickly adopted it into their workflow.

One participant noted they “didn’t even realize that they were using AI” because the flow felt so simple.

Appreciated that the manual creation flow was not disturbed, and they could continue using it as before.

Began using the feature for brainstorming questions and inspiration, even if they didn’t add every generated question.

Liked that they could create multiple quiz variations for the same test, improving variety and engagement.

Add the ability to import text from PDFs to auto-generate questions.

Support creating quizzes with mixed question types in one go.

Allow generating questions from a website link or online text.

Provide a history of generated questions, so users can revisit earlier sets.

04 User Testing

To measure adoption and refine the design, I ran usability tests and collected direct feedback from target users.

What users liked

Found quiz generation easier and quickly adopted it into their workflow.

One participant noted they “didn’t even realize that they were using AI” because the flow felt so simple.

Appreciated that the manual creation flow was not disturbed, and they could continue using it as before.

Began using the feature for brainstorming questions and inspiration, even if they didn’t add every generated question.

Liked that they could create multiple quiz variations for the same test, improving variety and engagement.

What users suggested

Add the ability to import text from PDFs to auto-generate questions.

Support creating quizzes with mixed question types in one go.

Allow generating questions from a website link or online text.

Provide a history of generated questions, so users can revisit earlier sets.

  • Add an option to automatically generate clear explanations for each question, enhancing the educational value of quizzes in future releases.

  • History storage option so that the users can go to previously generated questions.
